The scientific Specialities one by one: what you actually do, and what they open

Most Specialities are chosen from a title and a rumour. This guide says what is actually inside each one, what it genuinely opens afterwards, and the specific trap of each — the reason people regret it, which is never the same from one Speciality to the next.

In short

  • Three Specialities in Première, four hours each. Two in Terminale, six hours each. Those two final ones are what higher education reads.
  • Physics-Chemistry is not the option for people who dislike maths — it is maths applied, with units on top.
  • Computer Science is programming, not computer skills. Engineering Science is analysing real systems, not technology lessons.
  • Biology is the most frequently underestimated: it demands as much rigour as the others, plus a great deal of memory.

How it works, in two lines

Three Specialities are chosen at the end of Seconde and followed through Première, at four hours a week each. At the end of Première one is dropped; the two kept move up to six hours a week in Terminale. Everything that follows — applications, preparatory classes, schools — reads those two.

The entry ticket

Mathematics

Sequences, second-degree equations, differentiation, trigonometry, scalar product, conditional probability in Première; then limits, continuity, logarithm and exponential, integration, vectors in space and random variables in Terminale. The step up between the two years is real: Première still rewards technique, Terminale demands proof.

  • Opens: every scientific preparatory class, engineering schools, science degrees, economics, computing — and it is required, not merely recommended, for nearly all of them.
  • The trap: dropping it at the end of Première and taking the three-hour option instead, believing the two are equivalent. They are not, and the door does not reopen.

The broadest partner

Physics-Chemistry

Constitution and transformation of matter, motion and interactions, energy, waves and signals. In Terminale: reaction kinetics, acid-base equilibria, Newtonian mechanics, wave optics, energy conversions. Laboratory work runs throughout, and it is assessed.

  • Opens: the widest range of scientific preparatory classes when paired with maths, plus medicine and health, chemistry, materials, energy.
  • The trap: choosing it as a way of doing science without maths. It is the opposite — nearly every exercise is an algebraic manipulation with units, and a student weak in algebra fails here before failing in maths.

The most underestimated

Biology and Earth Sciences

Genetics and evolution, the Earth and climate, the human body and health. A large body of knowledge to hold, and above all a demanding exercise: reading a set of documents, extracting what is relevant, and building an argued answer from it.

  • Opens: medicine and health, veterinary and agronomy preparatory classes, biology, geology, environmental sciences.
  • The trap: taking it as the gentle science. It is the one where the volume to memorise is largest, and the reasoning is graded as strictly as anywhere else. Chosen by default, it produces the most disappointing marks of the three.

Concrete and demanding

Engineering Science

Taking a real system apart — a mechanism, a circuit, a control loop — modelling how it behaves, predicting it, and checking the prediction against the object itself. Mechanics, electricity, information and control, plus a substantial project carried through the year.

  • Opens: technological preparatory classes, engineering schools recruiting straight after the Baccalauréat, and everything to do with industry, robotics and design.
  • The trap: treating it as a replacement for Physics-Chemistry. It is an excellent second Speciality, but a target that explicitly expects Physics-Chemistry will not accept it in exchange — check the requirements before swapping.

Programming, for real

Computer Science

Programming in Python, how data is represented, algorithms and their cost, databases and queries, networks, and how a machine is actually built. It is a scientific subject with its own proofs, not a set of practical skills.

  • Opens: the computing-oriented preparatory classes, engineering schools, computer science degrees, data and cybersecurity courses.
  • The trap: choosing it because one likes computers. Liking a screen and building an algorithm are unrelated. Those who thrive here are those who liked maths first — the subject is far closer to maths than to technology.

The two Terminale options, which are not Specialities

They are added on top of the two remaining Specialities, and they are mutually exclusive — which one is available depends on a decision already taken.

What I observe

Almost every regret I hear has the same shape: the Speciality was chosen on its name. Computer Science because of computers, Physics-Chemistry to avoid maths, Biology because it looked gentler. Half an hour spent looking at what is really inside — an actual exercise, an actual chapter — prevents two years of the wrong subject.

And the other Specialities?

I teach the scientific ones, so those are the ones I describe from the inside. The others exist and are entirely respectable choices — here is what they lead to, in one line each, so that the picture is complete.

One source, and only one

Which Specialities a school actually opens varies from one school to the next, and the official requirements of each course are republished every year on the national application platform. This guide describes what is stable — the content and what it leads to. For a given year and a given school, only those two sources count.

If you remember one thing

Ask to see an actual exercise from each Speciality being considered, taken from the Terminale year rather than the first weeks. Nothing else — no brochure, no open day, no older sibling's opinion — tells a student as reliably whether he will still want to be there in eighteen months.
