Choosing your Specialities for a scientific path
Three Specialities in Première, two in Terminale. This choice, made at fifteen, decides what will still be possible after the Baccalauréat — far more than the marks do. Here is the one rule that governs all the rest, the combinations that actually hold, and the mistakes I see come back every year.
In short
- One rule governs everything: keep the Maths Speciality in Terminale. Without it, scientific preparatory classes and most engineering schools close.
- Maths complémentaires is not the Maths Speciality. It is the most expensive confusion, and the most common one.
- The combination that opens the most doors remains Maths + Physics-Chemistry. Engineering Science and Computer Science are excellent second choices — never replacements for maths.
- The real timetable starts in Seconde, not at the end of Première. By then, you are only confirming a decision already taken.
How the choice actually unfolds
In the French system, a student picks three Specialities at the end of Seconde, follows them through Première, then drops one and keeps two for Terminale. Those two final subjects are what higher education looks at.
Three moments matter, and only the first two are real decisions:
- End of Seconde — the three Specialities are chosen. This is where the range of possible paths is set.
- End of Première — one is dropped, and the optional subject for Terminale is chosen alongside it. This is where the range narrows, definitively.
- Terminale — the higher-education applications are filed. Nothing can be changed any more: the file simply records the choices made two years earlier.
Which is why a guidance discussion held in Terminale is almost always too late. It arrives when the decisions have already been taken, quietly, in Seconde.
The rule that decides everything else
For any scientific path, one thing matters more than every other consideration put together: keeping the Maths Speciality in Terminale. Not maths in some form — the Speciality itself, six hours a week.
Everything downstream is built on it: preparatory classes, engineering schools, university science degrees, and a good part of economics and computing courses. A file without it is not a weaker file — for these paths, it is simply out of scope.
The confusion to avoid
Maths complémentaires is not the Maths Speciality. It is a three-hour option, designed for students who give up the Speciality at the end of Première. It is enough for medicine, economics and several vocational degrees. It is not enough for a scientific preparatory class, nor for most engineering schools.
The names look interchangeable. They are not. Every year, families discover the difference once the choice can no longer be undone.
The combinations that hold, by target
Scientific preparatory class (CPGE)
Maths Speciality in Terminale, without exception. The second one sets the flavour: Physics-Chemistry is the broadest choice and keeps every scientific preparatory class open; Computer Science points towards the computing-oriented ones; Engineering Science towards the technological ones. Maths + Physics-Chemistry remains the safest pair when the target is not yet settled.
Engineering school straight after the Baccalauréat
Same requirement on maths, and the same freedom on the second subject — chosen according to the field aimed at rather than according to prestige. These schools recruit on the file alone, which makes the Terminale marks in the two Specialities decisive.
Medicine and health (PASS / LAS)
Physics-Chemistry and Biology-Geology form the usual pair. A frequent mistake: believing that biology carries the year. What sinks students in the first year is far more often chemistry, physics and the handling of quantitative reasoning — which is why Maths complémentaires is strongly advised here.
Veterinary, agronomy, life sciences (BCPST)
Biology-Geology is indispensable. The second place is played between Physics-Chemistry and Maths, and both are defensible. What is not defensible is dropping maths altogether: this preparatory class is far more mathematical than its reputation suggests, and that is where the first year hurts.
One source, and only one
The official requirements are published every year, course by course, on the national application platform. That is the only text that carries authority, and it does move. This guide describes what is stable; the platform states what is true for a given year — check it before deciding.
The three mistakes that come back every year
1. Choosing by the teacher rather than by the target
A subject dropped because this year's teacher did not suit, or kept because a friend is keeping it. The teacher will change; the consequence of the choice will not. This is the single most common reason a scientific path quietly closes.
2. Giving up maths while believing you are keeping them
The Speciality is dropped, Maths complémentaires is taken, and the family is reassured — there is still maths on the timetable. The volume is halved, the syllabus is different, and the doors that were the whole point of the plan are already shut.
3. Waiting for the marks to decide
A difficult first term in maths is taken as a verdict on ability. Almost always, it is a gap in an earlier chapter — and a gap can be repaired in a few weeks, whereas an abandoned Speciality cannot be taken back. Repair first, decide afterwards.
What I observe
The students who drop the Maths Speciality are rarely the weakest. They are, very often, those who spent Première catching up on something never consolidated in Seconde, and who read their exhaustion as a lack of ability. The subject was not too hard: it was being built on a floor with a hole in it.
Maths expertes: useful, or decorative?
This three-hour option is added on top of the Maths Speciality, for students who keep it. No preparatory class formally requires it. It is still worth taking for two concrete reasons: its content — arithmetic, complex numbers, matrices — is almost exactly the first term of a scientific preparatory class, and its presence in a file signals a student who went looking for more.
One reservation, and it is a real one: taken while the rest is already fragile, it drags every mark down at once. Three hours added to a timetable have to be taken from somewhere. Solid first, ambitious second.
And if the Speciality you need is not offered?
This is a common situation in smaller schools, and the usual one in French schools abroad, where a Speciality only opens if enough students register for it. It is not a dead end, but it does have to be handled deliberately.
- Distance enrolment for the missing Speciality. The national distance-learning service allows a Speciality absent from the school to be followed remotely, in agreement with the school. It demands genuine autonomy — this is exactly the case where regular outside support decides the outcome.
- Replacing it, and saying so. A file that explains a constrained choice is read very differently from one that leaves it unexplained. What is missing is the Speciality, not the ability — provided the letter says it plainly.
- Never sacrificing maths to compensate. If a choice has to be made, it is the second Speciality that gives way, never the first.
If you remember one thing
Start from the target and work backwards to the choice — never the reverse. Take the path aimed at, read its official requirements, and deduce the two Terminale Specialities from them. A choice made the other way round, subject by subject and mark by mark, produces a file that no longer corresponds to any plan.
