Maths in Seconde: the year the subject changes nature
Seconde is not the last year of middle school made harder. It is the year maths stops being a technique and becomes a form of reasoning — which is why students who scored highly at the Brevet find themselves at nine out of twenty in November. Here is exactly what changes, and what this year quietly decides for everything that follows.

Why the marks fall — and why that alone is not the alarm
At the end of middle school, an exercise usually describes the path: it states the situation, names the tool, and asks for the result. Being good at maths means applying the right technique correctly. From Seconde onwards, that description disappears — and what is marked is the reasoning that fills the gap.
A second effect adds to the first, and it is purely mechanical: a Seconde class brings together students who were spread across several middle-school classes. The ranking marks move even when nothing about the student has changed.
So a fall in the first term is normal information, not a verdict. What deserves attention is different: a fall that does not come back up in the second term. That one is not an adjustment — it means the new demand has not been understood, and it will not fix itself.
The three breaks of the year
1. Algebra stops being a chapter and becomes a tool
Until then, expanding and factorising were exercises in their own right, announced as such. In Seconde they are never announced again: they appear inside every other chapter, mid-line, as something assumed. A student who was slow but correct at them now becomes a student who cannot finish anything.
2. Proof replaces application
Show that appears, and it is a different exercise from calculate. Here the answer is already given: what is marked is the chain that leads to it. Students who have always been rewarded for the right final result discover that a correct result with no justification is now worth almost nothing — and they experience it as unfairness rather than as a new rule.
3. The question no longer says what to do
No more named tool, no more guiding sub-questions. The student has to translate a situation into mathematics himself, then choose. This is the hardest break, because nothing in it can be revised: it is not knowledge that is missing, it is a habit that has never been built.
What I observe
The students who struggle most in Seconde are often those who succeeded most comfortably in middle school — precisely because imitating the model worked so well for them that they never needed anything else. The year does not reveal a weakness; it removes a crutch that had been enough until then.
What Seconde really decides, and nobody says in September
At the end of this year, three Specialities are chosen. Administratively, the maths mark does not forbid anything. In practice it decides almost everything — because it decides what the student believes he is capable of.
A student sitting at nine out of twenty in March does not choose the Maths Speciality, even when he is perfectly able to follow it. He rules himself out. The real stake of the year
In Seconde, a student is not playing for points on a report. He is playing for the range of paths that will still be open to him. That is why this is the cheapest year in which to act, and the most expensive one to let slide.
What actually works during the year
- Write out the reasoning, even when the answer is found. This is by far the best return on time: it is exactly what the new marking rewards, and it costs nothing but the habit of not stopping at the result.
- Redo a failed exercise three days later, without the correction in sight. Reading a correction produces recognition, not ability. Only the second attempt, from a blank page, tells you whether anything was learnt.
- Treat algebra separately, like scales in music. Ten minutes a day on expanding, factorising and fractions, outside any chapter. It is the one thing that unblocks several subjects at once, physics included.
- Do not wait for the second-term meeting. By then the Speciality choices are already being discussed, and the room for repair has shrunk to nothing.
One last thing: physics is often the wrong culprit
A large share of I am hopeless at physics in Seconde is not about physics at all. What blocks the student is proportionality, unit conversion, powers of ten and algebraic manipulation — that is, maths, met again under another name and without warning.
It is worth checking before concluding that a student dislikes the subject. Repairing the maths very often repairs the physics mark at the same time, and at no extra cost.
